Most shopfronts in Dubai carry two or three signs doing completely different jobs, and the commonest mistake is treating them as one decision. A fascia sign has to be read from across a car park. A reception logo has to look right from two metres away. Spending outdoor money on an indoor sign, or indoor materials on an outdoor one, is how budgets get wasted and signs get replaced early.
What changes between indoor and outdoor
Viewing distance sets the letter height
A rough working rule: every 25mm of letter height gives roughly 3 metres of comfortable reading distance. A sign read from 30 metres away needs letters around 250mm tall. Interior signage read from 3 to 5 metres works at 50 to 80mm. Get this wrong and no amount of lighting rescues it.
The environment is the real difference
Outdoors in the UAE a sign faces surface temperatures well above ambient, relentless UV, wind load, airborne dust and the occasional heavy downpour. Indoors it faces air conditioning and cleaning staff. That is why an outdoor sign needs sealed housings, IP-rated drivers, UV-stable acrylic and a fixing method calculated for wind, while an indoor sign can use lighter builds and more delicate finishes.
Approvals only apply in one direction
Exterior signage needs permits. Interior signage generally does not, unless it is visible from outside through glazing, which is a detail that catches people out in mall units and glass-fronted showrooms.

Indoor signage that earns its place
- Reception and feature walls — flat acrylic or brushed metal letters on standoffs, sometimes halo-lit for depth.
- Wayfinding — floor, lift lobby and directional signs. Boring until it is missing, then it is the only thing customers mention.
- Digital signage and LED screens — where content changes: promotions, menus, queue information, live data.
- Neon and LED neon features — atmosphere pieces in restaurants, cafes and salons that also earn their keep on social media.
- Window and wall graphics — printed or frosted vinyl for privacy, promotions and branding.

Outdoor signage that earns its place
- Shopfront fascia signage — usually channelium letters, front-lit or halo-lit. This is the one that brings people in.
- Building and facade signage — larger format, needs structural fixing and full approval.
- Pylon and monument signs — free-standing, high visibility, project-priced.
- Banners and large-format printing — short-term campaigns, openings, hoardings.
- Vehicle branding — outdoor advertising that parks outside your customers rather than waiting for them.
The bilingual requirement
Commercial signage in Dubai generally needs Arabic alongside English, with the Arabic given equal or greater prominence. This is a design constraint, not an afterthought. Arabic script has different proportions, different baseline behaviour and different spacing needs, and a lockup designed in English and then translated usually looks wrong and often fails the permit submission. Design both together.
A simple way to brief it
For each sign, answer four questions before anyone quotes:
- How far away is the furthest person who needs to read it?
- Does it need to work after dark?
- Is it exposed to sun, rain and wind, or is it protected?
- Does the message change, or is it fixed?
Those four answers determine letter height, lighting method, material specification and whether you need a printed sign or a screen. Everything else is detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can the same sign be used indoors and outdoors?
It can, if it is built to outdoor specification. The reverse is the problem: an indoor-specification sign moved outside in Dubai typically fails within a year.
How long does outdoor signage last here?
Properly specified and installed, five years and beyond with routine cleaning. The failures we are called to replace are almost always unsealed housings or low-grade acrylic.
Do I need approval for a sign inside my shop?
Usually not, unless it reads to the outside through glazing. If in doubt, ask before you build.
